Naturally, improving the environmental conditions in any workplace is good for one’s health. Mold removal, asbestos detection, indoor air quality checks and so on ensure that you’re exposed to fewer hazards.
However, keeping your buildings or work environments “healthy” can be expensive. Hiring an environmental consulting firm to inspect and remove toxic materials strains the wallet!
Or so we thought. As a recent study published in the The Globe and Mail suggests, in the grand scheme of things, an environmentally cleaner workplace can actually improve worker productivity. That means staying on top of building hazards increases your profits instead of just straining your bankbook.
The study discussed in the newspaper came from the National Bureau of Economic Research. It deals more with outdoor environmental factors but the principle it outlines applies to any workplace, indoor or outdoor.
The researchers analyzed data from farm workers in the Central Valley of California during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Farmers would scan a barcode into a computer each time they collected a bushel of blueberries or gapes, thus quantifying their performance.
The study found a direct link between the presence of ground-level ozone and productivity. Like many other compounds, such as mold or asbestos, high concentrations of ozone irritate the lungs, limiting their function, and exacerbate cardiovascular disease.
According to the study, cleaner air in the form of a 10 part-per-billion reduction in ozone concentration led to a 4.2 per cent increase in worker productivity. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, that would translate into $1.1 billion in annual cost savings.
That’s just one example to follow – but it’s extremely important. To any business wondering about mold removal, asbestos, or any other toxic compounds that affect lung and heart function: FIX IT. It may cost you money in the short-term but it’s been scientifically proven that you will literally profit from it in the long term.
The reason is simple and pure common sense: healthier workers are better workers.

If you know Environmental Services Group, you know we strive to lead by example in the field of environmental consulting rather than maintain status quo. We’re constantly trying to discover new practices and set new standards for processes like asbestos removal, lead testing, mold detection and so on.
So, when one of our own makes a special effort to better his or herself and raise the personal standard for our employees, it’s important to recognize that person as a leader. Matt Magnus deserves that special attention.
Matt specializes in asbestos testing and decided that the standard for asbestos testing in Toronto, the GTA and beyond wasn’t good enough. He thus decided to complete a three-day course at the Asbestos Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. The process helped him earn a certification not required in his home province of Ontario, Canada.
Standards for asbestos testing and sampling are stricter in the U.S. Schools require asbestos sampling from someone with official Building Inspector Certification from the United States Environmental Protection Agency. By completing the course in Phoenix, Matt earned that special designation, even though it isn’t required by law in Canada.
Matt’s official accolade: US EPA Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) Building Inspector Certification. Equipped with valuable new knowledge from the training course, he plans to implement new standards across ESG, updating asbestos sampling consultants on the most state-of-the-art procedures.
One example of a valuable lesson Matt is passing to ESG; workers often inflict damage while performing asbestos samplings. Ironically, while they’re trying to detect harmful chemicals, they’ll kick up dust, chemicals and other dangerous fibres during the process and sometimes leave them behind.
However, in light of Matt’s findings, all ESG consultants will be outfitted with HEPA-filtered vacuums to ensure no hazardous mess is left behind following sampling procedures.
Congratulations to Matt Magnus for going above and beyond what was expected of him in the field of environmental consulting. Environmental Services Group is proud to have him!

Contrary to what many businesses believe, it may actually “pay to go green.”
A recent poll conducted by TD Bank revealed that consumers believe green or environmentally friendly buildings have at least some positive impact on their communities. Being green for a building could mean being constructed or renovated using sustainable materials; it could also mean being properly inspected for potentially harmful agents.
How can a building ensure it’s as environmentally friendly as possible if it’s already built and no renovations are the horizon? Finding a good environmental consulting firm is a start. The proper experts can help a building with lead testing, asbestos and mold removal, radon testing and countless other ways of measuring how much risk to residents’ health and to the environment a given building poses.
The survey also revealed a generation gap among the responders. The younger groups – the “millenials” aged 18 to 34 – were the most aware of green buildings and the most likely to tailor their consumption based on whether or not a company’s venue is environmentally conscious. In other words, the biggest consumers of the future are the most environmentally aware.
The survey’s revelation suggests a win-win situation for businesses and consumers. By undergoing proper environmental consulting and inspection for their buildings, businesses obviously reduce their company’s environmental footprints and make their buildings safer places to work, shop and breathe. But the simple act of becoming greener can also be profitable. The upcoming younger generation wants to give its business to the greenest companies.
Now, it’s up to businesss in Toronto, the GTA and all over the world to take the next step. Ensure your company’s buildings have the highest standards for indoor air quality and environmental friendliness and the customers will follow you. The next step is to let the world know you’re doing it.
Jacquelynn Henke, Real Estate Strategy Officer for TD Bank, says it best:
“Consumers do believe [green] buildings are good for the environment and for their own health, but businesses must do a better job of communicating to their customers and the communities they serve about the development of environmentally friendly buildings.”

Molds naturally exist in the environment and are sometimes beneficial organisms, helping us make delicious cheeses or breaking down decaying materials in nature. But some types of mold are toxic to humans, and can cause serious health problems. Here’s how they get into your home.
The number one reason mold can be found in homes and buildings is moisture. Whether it’s humidity in the air from cooking or showers, moisture trapped in an over-sealed building, leaks or water damage from flooding, any kind of excess moisture can lead to mold growth if there is something for it to feed on. Mold eats any kind of organic material, which can include glues, starches, leather, wood, paper, fabric and drywall. The humidity in your home is considered high at above 70%.
This extra moisture creates an environment that is hospitable to mold, which can travel into your home as spores in the air or also be transported into your home on objects. The relative humidity of your home should be kept under 55%, and this can be achieved by using the bathroom fan after a shower, using the exhaust fan on the stove when cooking and properly maintaining all of your heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems. Regular dusting, low humidity and proper ventilation are the best recipe for keeping mold at bay.
While prevention is key, a mold inspection should always be conducted when buying a new home or when your family experiences unexplained symptoms such as nosebleeds, headaches, fatigue or trouble breathing. A mold inspection is the only way to properly check for mold in your home, because mold can hide inside your walls and remain unseen while it continues to grow, eat away at your home and release toxic spores.

Foreclosed properties are often seen as great investments or cheap first homes, but in many cases they may have been hastily prepared for sale, leaving them at risk of containing mold, asbestos or lead.
A quick online search reveals thousands of websites and many in the Greater Toronto Area that are begging to offer you a deal on a foreclosed home, sometimes known as a power of sale home. In the case of power of sale homes, the bank is the one selling the home.
More often than not, these homes come with lengthy sales agreements that include several clauses, usually the most poignant being that you accept the home “as is”. Lead and asbestos may be common problems in older homes due to their use in paint and residential building materials decades ago. More importantly, if these “as is” homes require any remodeling or renovation work, this work will disturb both lead and asbestos and create a health risk as these materials will go airborne and be inhaled.
**In any home built before the 1980s, a lead inspection and asbestos inspection should be completed before moving in**
Mold can be found in any home regardless of age, but it is more likely to be present in homes that have suffered flooding, other forms of neglect and disrepair or water damage.
A distressed property is a home that has not been repossessed due to the previous owner defaulting on their mortgage, but that has suffered extreme neglect, unsanitary conditions or hoarding behaviour. In the case of distressed property, mold is a common problem and if you have any information that may suggest the home is a distressed property, a mold inspection is necessary. When purchasing a home, do not hesitate to make your offer on the home conditional on whether you are satisfied with a mold inspection, lead inspection and asbestos inspection beforehand.

As time goes by, and perhaps due to a down economy, more and more fly-by-night ”environmental consultants” and companies start to pop up. As follows, these companies may appear to be legitimate, claiming to be “certified” and “licensed” in their respective fields. But in reality, they’re about as legitimate as a Nigerian Internet Scam.
But how can the average consumer tell if an environmental consultant is legitimate? In a nutshell, by paying heed to the following criteria:
Ensure their corporate name is registered - legitimate companies have legitimate (registered) businesses and business names. It’s all too easy to register a domain name, buy an “online certificate” for a few dollars, get a cell phone, set up a website and call yourself an environmental consultant.
Business history – ensure the company has a history of providing good service and a solid track record. Asking for references and checking with the Better Business Bureau will save you a boatload of grief down the road.
General Liability Insurance – at the very minimum, make sure that the company in question has a minimum of 2 million dollars in Errors and Omissions Insurance.
Registered Occupational Hygienist or Certified Industrial Hygienist on Staff Recognized Certifications - If the company in question uses acronyms like CMI (certified mold inspector) and CMR (certified mold remediator), check to see that the certifiying body is legitimate. If it is not from ACAC then it is likely a quick internet print yourself a certificate.
Scope of services - does this company provide only one service or, like most professional environmental consultants, can it offer a range of other hazardous material inspection services such as air quality inspections, asbestos inspections etc.
Further, when looking for an Environmental Removal and Abatement Contractor, look for:
Company name- same criteria applies here as it does for professional enviromental consultant (see above).
General Liability Insurance – at the very minimum, make sure that the company in question has a minimum of 2 million dollars in Pollution Control Insurance.
Years of Experience - Asbestos is a “designated substance,” as such, asbestos abaement companies must be registered with the Ontario Government. Most legitimate asbestos abatement companies have 20+ years of experience with both mold and asbestos matters.
Recognized Certifications - IICRC puts out 3 Excellent Certifications including Water Restoration Technician, Applied Microbial Remediation, Applied Structural Drying References. Protect yourself by checking to see if said company is certified.
