The Toronto District School Board has a dilemma many homeowners can relate to. The TDSB has recently decided to put off renovations to their aging school buildings and infrastructure in an effort to stay within tight budgetary constraints.
This move came in the wake of a report which acknowledged the effects of what it called “significant funding gaps” when it came to issues like repairs to leaky windows and roofs, among others. To highlight the magnitude of the problem, the TDSB owns 558 buildings, of which 80% are more than 40 years old.
When times are tough, the temptation is certainly there to put off much needed repairs in the interests of juggling a dwindling budget, or putting up “temporary” measures that then stay in place for another ten years. But, it’s not just your budget that’s at risk -it’s your health.
Poor Maintenance Leads to Mold Growth
Poorly maintained older buildings can easily lead to the ideal conditions for mold growth and proliferation. Like the TDSB, when times are tough you might be tempted to put off needed renovations to your home, but indoor air quality – and your health – can’t wait for better times.
Leaking windows, roofing, eavestroughing, fascia and siding can lead to areas of chronic moisture where you can’t even see them.
These areas often become mold infested and you’ll only find out when you do go to renovate and find the walls and floors full of unhealthy mold. You may also know because you’re starting to feel the symptoms of mold exposure, such as:
There may even be more serious health effect, so it’s important not to take chances.
