Environmental Services Group (ESG) was engaged to provide environmental consulting services for the remediation of water-damaged and bio-waste contaminated building materials in the ICU of a Peel Region Hospital. A dialysis drain leak in a Patient Room caused mold growth and contamination with human bio-waste, impacting adjacent rooms and hallways.
Scope of Work:
ESG’s role involved moisture mapping, air sampling, and overseeing remediation and post-construction verification. Using industry standards, including IICRC S520 and CSA Z317.13, we ensured the safe removal of mold-contaminated materials, bio-waste cleanup, and restoration of the work area to a state of normal fungal ecology.
Key Activities:
- Initial assessment, moisture mapping, and air sampling on May 23, 2023.
- Daily verification assessments conducted during remediation (May 26–29, 2023).
- Use of ATP testing and spore trap air sampling for real-time and laboratory-verified contamination analysis.
- Coordination with contractors to ensure safe removal of Category 3 bio-waste and mold-impacted materials.
- Final clearance provided after confirming acceptable moisture content, air quality, and surface hygiene levels.
Outcome:
The affected areas were successfully returned to a safe and habitable condition, verified by low spore counts, dry building materials, and ATP testing within acceptable ranges. ESG’s timely interventions minimized disruption to the ICU while ensuring compliance with healthcare infection control standards.
