Particles or gases from the incomplete burning of various fuels. Fuels can include wood, gas, oil, coal, propane, etc.
In the event of a house fire, all the materials that get burned will release combustion by-products and residual compounds/structures associated with fire and smoke into the air and subsequently on building surfaces and contents. Particles less than 10 micrometers in diameter (PM10) pose a health concern because they can be inhaled into and accumulate in the respiratory system. The EPA recommends that the annual exposure be less than 50 µg/m3 with a 24 exposure not to exceed 150 µg/m3.
Assessing the carbon monoxide levels, airborne and superficial particulate matter (soot, char and ash), carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde and damaged materials is imperative to restoring your living space. ESG uses scientific equipment that provide us with on-site information and measurements of given parameters, as well as the use of laboratories that analyze particles invisible to the naked eye and that could potentially damage your health and your home further.
The use of the Quest EVM-7 is used to sample the general indoor air quality parameters such as Temperature, Relative Humidity, CO2 , CO , Dust Particulates (Fine PM2.5) and Total Volatile Organic Compounds. These six recorded IAQ parameters are graphed and compared against ‘key performance indicators’ derived from current standards, guidelines and good practice.
Laboratory analysis is used to determine the presence/absence and concentrations of Black Carbon (Soot), Carbonized Material (Char) and Carbonized Material (Ash). For environments which have not been impacted by a fire-loss and contain no significant sources of combustion (incomplete or otherwise), it is expected that no presence of Soot, Char and Ash should be present on the sampled surfaces. As such, the presence of Soot, Char or Ash in any quantity should indicate that the surface/substrate has been impacted by fallout originating from the loss.
